Just what makes a smoothie a green smoothie? Well, green smoothies are smoothies with a healthy mix of greens blended in the mix. Why? Greens are extremely nutritious, but they are also hard to fit into your daily meals or diet. Greens may not be the most flavorful foods and can be hard to chew and digest. So blending them in a smoothie is a good solution for adding more greens to your diet. Adding sweet fruits helps the flavor and makes getting your daily servings of both fruits and veggies even easier.

Healthy Green Coconut Smoothie
I have been experimenting more with coconut oil and I think I like it. So you may see a few more coconut oil smoothies in the future. It isn’t a staple for most kitchens, but maybe it should be. Coconut oil, said to be “healthiest oil on earth” is extremely good for for you (read more here) and adds a unique taste you will enjoy. Try and and let me know how you like it. Here is a brand I recommend: Barlean’s Organic Oils Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Ingredients:
- 2 bananas, frozen
- 2 HUGE handfuls spinach (you won’t even taste it)
- 1 cup milk (almond or soy is even better than moo juice)
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
Add all ingredients into a blender. Blend until mixed. Serve in tall glasses and enjoy.

Ginger Winter Green Smoothie
We are all trying to eat better, especially as we get older. And we are all getting older, some a little faster than others. ;-)
With my own age creeping ever higher I have been exploring more green smoothies and found one from Victoria Boutenko from Raw Family and wish to share it with you. The key ingredient here is fresh ginger or ginger-root.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup organic frozen berries (any kinds, but I prefer a good mix with blueberries)
- 2 cups fresh spinach
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 inch ginger-root, or to taste (I will usually grate mine into the blender first.)
Some more reasons you may wish to increase your ginger consumption.
* Enhances natural resistance for cold and flu.
* Reduces inflammation.
* Contains at least 12 anti-aging constituents that inactivate free radicals.
* Supports blood platelet health and cardiovascular function.
* Twenty-two known constituents inhibit inflammatory 5-lipoxygenase, supports prostate health.
Ginger is a good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium and Selenium, and Manganese. Find out more about ginger at The University of Maryland Medical Center.
Green Julius
This submission isn’t a smoothie recipe I have tried. And I’m not the biggest fan of green smoothies – usually not sweet enough for my tastes, but the health benefits of gren smoothies can’t be ignored. Please let me know if you try this one. I am very curious how the parsley would taste. That’s a lot of parsley. Pardons to the more famous Orange Julius recipes we have.
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups orange juice
- 2 large mangoes
- 2 cups fresh parsley or spinach
- 2 cups of ice
Blend well and drink your healthy green smoothie. Yields 4 cups or 2 servings, as I feel 16 ounces is one serving for a smoothie.
