Pomegranate Smoothie Recipes
Pomegranates are the fruit of legend and Greek mythology; it has even been called the “fruit of the dead” because of Persephone who ate 6 seeds when she was kidnapped by Hades to be his wife. But to be honest the pomegranate is far from being the “fruit of the dead” and is a super food.
Pomegranate Nutrients
The seeds of the pomegranate are full of nutrition and are particularly rich with vitamin C, potassium, pantothenic acid (B5). Pomegranates have many anti-oxidants such as tannins and flavonoids. These anti-oxidants have free-radical scavenging properties that help the body stay healthy. With these nutrients, the pomegranate is helpful for preventing diseases such as cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease.
The Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry stated that the juice of the Pomegranate is the healthiest fruit juice you can drink, outranking red wine, acai juice and apple juice among others.
Adding Pomegranate to Your Smoothie
The easiest thing to do is buy a high-quality pomegranate juice and use that in your pomegranate smoothie recipe. But, as with most food, getting it as close to the source as you can is always best; of course this always takes the most work. If it comes down to not using pomegranate because the harder work to juice them or just using store-bought pomegranate juice, I would just use the juice and be happy I have a healthy smoothie. But for those who would rather juice your own pomegranate, here are some tips and suggestions.
You have two options, remove the seeds from the pomegranate and simply toss them into the blender. I can tell you though, even the high end blenders struggle to puree so you may have to accept the fact your will have some less than smooth smoothies, but you will be getting a lot of fiber. Option two requires you to remove the seeds and than add them to a strainer that you can then mash the seeds in and squeeze the delicious pomegranate juice into a bowl you place underneath the strainer. Doing it this way can take a few pomegranates so don’t feel bad if you end up just using pomegranate juice from the store…its all good, especially the pomegranate smoothie.
